Three Sunday League games survive weather

The weather severely hindered the Workington and District Sunday League fixtures at the weekend – with only three games going ahead.

There was one game in each division with 17 goals shared around the six contestants.

Borough FC did not contribute, however, in their Division One clash with FC 32 as they were beaten at home 3-0.

Stuart Gray (2) and Tom Pardini scored the goals for FC 32 who are now among four teams who have collected six points so far.

In the top flight two of the three teams without a point met at Wakefield Road – and they were also the two teams who won promotion from Division One last season.

This time, however, it was the runners-up Orchard who beat the champions Dearham 5-3 in a game which apparently could have gone either way.

Keith Skillen made the difference, scoring a hat-trick for Orchard, while Nat Mitchell and Daniel Burns were also on the mark.

Rab Bower, Gavin Manchester and Gary Morrison replied for Dearham who stay bottom of the pile.

Salterbeck are now top in Division Two, but they might have expected to open a bigger advantage as they could only draw 3-3 at Flimby.

Sean Pilling (2) and Brian Straughton scored for Salterbeck with Darren Wilson (2) and David Young on target for the homesters.

There will be five games in the first round of the Sunday County Cup in the west of the county.

The five ties are being played on Sunday, September 28 with an even split of teams from the Workington Sunday League and the Egremont Sunday League.

Matches scheduled are: Thornhill FC v St Bees Village; Crosby v Deer Orchard; Flimby v St Bees FC; Bransty Rangers v Wath Brow Hornets; Red Lion v Red House Athletic.

The rest of the teams will join at the second round stage.

This week-end in the Workington Sunday League, all the fixtures will be League Cup ties and secretary Ken Bragg is urging teams to use common sense if there is another weather problem.

“Rather than create a backlog of fixtures we will be looking to teams to swap venues if there is a chance of getting a game completed,” he said.

The first round matches are: The Well v Bounty; FC32 v Flimby; Miners Arms v Glasson Rangers; Senhouse Street v Dearham; Red House v Salterbeck; Northside v Captain Nelson; Letters Inn v Borough.

A second round tie being played is: Deer Orchard v Bluebell. All kick-offs are 1-30pm.
