THE final match in the “King of Whins” summer league took place at Whins pond on Tuesday.
Ian Corri needed four points to overtake leader Dave Wardman and take the title.
Dave adopted worm tactics but failed to register a bite for the second week running. Ian chose the whip and caught around a hundred roach for 4lb 15oz. Alan Edmondson fished spicy shrimp and prawn boilies to a lily bed. Alan soon had two bream in the net before contacting one of the larger carp. After a long battle he netted a beautiful common carp of 15lb 14oz giving him a total of 23lb 2oz for first place and ten league points. His fourth win of the season gave Alan joint fourth place in the final league positions.
Nick Oliver on peg nine also opted for the spicy boilie approach, landing a bream and a small common carp for 11lb 14oz and second place in the match. Jeff Whittle found a good stamp of skimmers on peg 16, pushing Ian further down the final placings with 6lb 3oz for third place.
Tony Whear targeting silver fish weighed in with 5lb 5oz for fourth place meaning Ian Corri finished fifth gaining just two points.
The final match place went to Tim Gustard with 4lb 12oz. All this meant that Dave Wardman was the new King of Whins by just one point.
The final league placings were 1 D Wardman 73 points, 2 I Corri 72, 3 J Whittle 58, joint 4 M Clusker and A Edmondson, both with 54, and 6 G Martin 38. The Sunday float only match was won by Nick Oliver who landed four common carp on the pole for a winning weight of 31lb 9oz. B Stevens was second with 21lb 3oz and match organiser Jeff Whittle was third with 12lb 7oz. The snowball final is on September 14. Draw 8am, fish 8.45 until 2.45.
Toilet paper and salmon don't usually go together but River Eden and District Fisheries Association secretary Tony Britton hooked and landed both during a session on the river Eden on Tuesday. When during a torrential downpour the troublesome sewage overflow in Rickerby Park, Carlisle began once again to spew its polluting load of human excrement, sanitary towels and toilet paper into the river Eden – a Site of Special Scientific Interest protected by European and British Law.
It has gone on for years. On a brighter note, Tony managed to land a lively 7lb cock salmon which accepted his homemade blue Flying C.
Two salmon of 15lb each are the biggest to be reported to me during the last week from the Eden, one taken in Jackie's Stream at Warwick Hall by owner Nick Marriner and one taken by Michael Jenkins in the Tower Pool on the Yorkshire Fly Fishers Water near Wetheral. Michael also added a seven-pounder. Both anglers were fly fishing. Also at Warwick Hall Alan Shaw fished a black and gold Toby in the Garden Wall on Thursday to take an 8¼-pounder. J Harrison and Robin Gillett both fished the Rushes on Friday Mr Harrison used a Flying C to take a 10-pounder and Robin fished a worm to land a grilse of 4lb. On Sunday, S Rose landed a 5lb grilse in the House Pool and Rob Oakley's Rapala fished in the Rushes tempted a 14-pounder. Monday saw Jim Robinson land a 6lb worm caught fish in Jackie's and J Carrick landed a seven-pounder whilst spinning in the Rushes. Other catches on the YFF's water included a brace of 7lb and 5lb to guest Howard Jones, a 5lb grilse in the Tower Pool to Mike Fenton and a brace of six-pounders to Geoff Cowburn from the Stumps and Spoutbeck. When conditions have been suitable the trout and grayling fishing has been good on the YFF water. Chris Taylor from Irthington recently landed 12 grayling and five trout to 2lb and fishery manager Mike Grimes had an interesting catch whilst targeting some trout rising in a backwater. Mike's Compara Dun presented on the surface was taken by a 10-inch perch, the first of this species I have heard of landed from the Eden for years. Mike also landed several trout.
On the Low House Estate waters near Armathwaite on Wednesday, John Chilton used a Flying C in the Willows on the Carrnook beat to hook and land a 13-pounder. The next day John fished Beck End on the Low House beat and landed a six-pounder and Paul Marston fished Leastrum to land a 4lb grilse using the same tactics. On Friday, Mr Elliot fished a Shrimp fly in the Tail of Linky on the Armathwaite beat and landed a six-pounder. On Saturday, David Carr fished Tobies Hole on the Low House beat with a brown and gold Devon to take a 4lb grilse.
