Great day out for Katie
Last updated 05:42, Friday, 05 September 2008
FOR the second year running a dismal summer has put paid to many country shows - and some of those that did go ahead, did so without their usual horse classes as the ground was just too wet for safety.
It's a cruel blow for a county which sets such store by its agricultural shows, and perhaps most especially so for those horses and riders who have been in training and looking forward to the season's events.
The shows at Appleby and Dufton did go ahead after some deeply anxious moments for both organisers and competitors.
The former proved to be a great day out for Katie Armstrong and Crossfell Eurydice who put on a great performance and took home a hat-trick of red rosettes.
Dan Thompson was also on form, winning two Appleby classes.
The Puissance class is always a great crowd pleaser, yet rarely seen in local shows. Dufton has turned it into something of a tradition however - and this year two of the county's most successful riders kept spectators right on the edge of their seats as they battled it out.
Jon Fletcher and Nigel Springer on Chemo Z and Belish may have been needing oxygen masks by the time the wall reached its maximum 1m 60, but both went clear and shared the top honours.
Cumbria's top western rider Debbie Jackson had a very successful trip to the WES Championship show at Moreton Morell in Warwickshire with her palomino partner Peppys All Gold.
They came second in four classes - the Intermediate Amateur Trail, Novice Horse Trail, AQHA Novice Amateur Trail, and Amateur Showmanship. They also took fifth place in Open Showmanship, AQHA Novice Amateur Horsemanship and Amateur Trail.
Debbie says the competition was fierce but the atmosphere at the show was brilliant.
The next show on her agenda is the East Coast Quarter Horse Championships in Cambridgeshire.
She's currently ranked first in the Rookie Circuit Award, second in the Prestigious Superhorse Award standings, second in the Novice Amateur Showmanship Circuit Award, and third in the Novice Amateur Trial Circuit Award standings, so she's hoping for a good show to keep her up in those rankings.
Caldew Riding Club had a good turnout for their second points show. In an unusual double Ryan Day won both the Open Pony and the Open Horse on Wizz and Flicker respectively, picking up the 65cm pony class red rosette on Ripple and the 75cm horse on Flicker along the way.
