Broken neck rider Complin set to face Comets

Lee Complin is set for a remarkable return to Premier League speedway at Workington’s Derwent Park tomorrow night.

The Stoke number one broke his neck in two places after his car left the road during in May and overturned. Doctors predicted Complin would be hospitalised for three months but his progress was such that he was out in a month and is ready to ride again.

Now Complin is ready to ride again and after passing a medical is just waiting for Speedway Control Board approval to resume against Workington Comets tomorrow night.

Comets team manager Ian Thomas said: “It’s been an amazing recovery because he was in a bad way with life-threatening injuries. I remember it was around the same time as Barry Burchatt was injured on the grasstrack.”

Complin’s accident occurred close to his home in the West Yorkshire village of Cowling, near Keighley.

He said: “I’ve said from the very beginning I intended to ride again this season and that has been my target.

“I've been told by the crash investigation team that a front tyre blew out and I must have lost control.

“The car was an absolute write off. To be honest, it didn't look anything like a car in the end, so it must have been a big crash.

“I have absolutely no recollection of the incident at all. Everything is blurred and I can't remember being taken to hospital or anything like that.

“Maybe all that is a good thing because I have no mental scars of the accident at all. I'm back driving again and basically just putting everything behind me and getting on with my life.

“I had head and neck injuries and two broken vertebrae in my back, among other injuries, and the treatment I got was first class, no doubt about that.

“Once they had diagnosed my chest infection and treated it, I moved on in leaps and bounds and no one could believe I made the sort of recovery I did as quickly as I did," he said.

Complin's last meeting for Stoke was on Saturday, May 24, when he scored nine points in a 36-59 defeat to Workington, and he says he has a mental plan regards his comeback.
