There goes the bell: Teacher on duty Catherine Fell rings the bell for the start of the new school year at Caldewlea School in 2001

Whether it’s a tiny starter, a youngster going into a new class, a suddenly-small 11-year-old venturing into a big secondary school, or a teenager embarking on sixth-form life, that big day at the start of September is a watershed in a young life.

And for teachers and dinner ladies, the restful days of the summer break are just a memory as classroooms fill up with a new set of pupils.
