Margaret Dover, 83, of Newlands Nursing Home, on Newlands Lane, has been given a medal by the Government for five years of work at Bells Farm in Aspatria.

Mrs Dover, originally from Workington’s Chapelbank, became a landgirl when she was 17 in 1941 and said she had fond memories of her time spent working on the farm.

Mrs Dover said: “I’m so happy to get this award after all these years, it’s such an honour.

“Those years were a fun time. It was hard at first being away from my home and my family but there was so much work to do on the farm there was no time to get homesick.

“We were doing a man’s job so we had to work as hard as them. We had to make sure there was enough food for the soldiers when they came home from war so we were doing all their jobs like ploughing, planting vegetables and milking the cows.

“I really wanted to make a difference and help out.

“I’m so glad that us landgirls could make a difference back home.”

Chef John Crouch says we should forage our food from nature. Would you ever do that?

Yes, it would be fresh and healthy

No, I don't have the time so I'll stick to my tins and processed stuff

Maybe, if I could find the time to go and find it
