Alley gate not political tool
Last updated 11:44, Thursday, 28 August 2008
I WRITE in reference to a letter from former city and county councillor Ralph Aldersey in the News & Star, Thursday August 21.
He makes comment regarding the installation of the first alley gates in Carlisle, in that they were agreed in 2004 by the Carlisle Local Area Committee.
This is not factually correct as the first gates were not approved until July 3 2006. This was with the approval of all members of the Local Committee.
With regard to the most recent list of alley gates that had been approved, this was not a political decision made by the Labour Group.
There was a set of criteria that was developed from the Crime and Disorder Partnership. Each had a separate score against them and the lanes that had the highest score were those that have come forward in the present list. Again, this list was approved unanimously.
Councillor Aldersey could have found this out by talking to his former colleagues for Castle Ward.
