Remembering ‘Half Mast’

HAVING worked at Maryport station in the 1950s, I can confirm that stationmaster TW Edgar’s nickname was “Half Mast” (News & Star, August 23).

Keeping track: Reader James Reay remembers working at Maryport station in the 1950s with stationmaster TW Edgar

To amusement of his staff, he habitually wore his trousers well-hitched, which revealed his socks.

The former M & C board room was utilised by the Permanent Way Engineer and his staff, and when part of the station was demolished, they were re-located to Corkicle station, and at the same time, a temporary booking office was established at the north gable end of the station building.

Unfortunately, the beautiful circular lawn, which was a feature of the station, was lost forever when the new station and approach road was built.

Chef John Crouch says we should forage our food from nature. Would you ever do that?

Yes, it would be fresh and healthy

No, I don't have the time so I'll stick to my tins and processed stuff

Maybe, if I could find the time to go and find it
