UP-AND-COMING talents in the amateur rugby league ranks have been selected to represent the Cumberland League in a match with their Barrow counterparts.
County selectors are keen to get a look at some fresh faces ahead of the Cumbria game with the touring South African Knights in October.
And they are going to use this game as part of their selection process but they are keen to stress that current county stars will not be excluded and everyone will be out to win their places.
Nine Copeland players and 14 Allerdale stars make up the 23-man Cumberland League side, under the guidance of coaches Gary Charlton and Martin Oglanby.
And they will clash with the Barrow League side at Askam ARLFC, on September 10 (7.30pm ko).
From this game a county side will be picked to play against the touring South African Rhinos at Craven Park, Barrow, on October 8.
County secretary, Joan Blair, said: “We are going to give a run out to some of the up-and-coming talent to see how they step up a level.
“We are not excluding members of the present county squad, we are just trying out some new faces and we will be in touch with club secretaries to check all their availability.”
There is further impetus for local ARL stars to shine with Barla set to tour the South Pacific at the end of the coming season so selectors will be on the lookout for county stars to join the squad.
The full squad is: Michael Maxwell, Phil Coyles, James McClellen, Martin Thompson (all Wath Brow); Jonathan Dawes, Daniel Rooney, Mark Foster (all Maryport); David Sewell, Dean Scholey, Kyle Lofthouse (all Ellenborough); Scott Lofthouse, Sean Flanagan, Barry Boyd (all Kells); Paul Osborne, Bryan Park, Phil Hewitt (all Broughton RR); Johnny Goulding, Mark Haycock (both Cockermouth); Richard George, Brett Phillips (both Seaton); John Paul Brocklebank (Egremont); Reece Fox (Hensingham); John Fiddler (Glasson).
