THE SUMMER weeks are often known as a dreary and tedious time for many young people. But this certainly wasn’t the case for more than 400 young West Cumbrians who overcame the summer boredom thanks to Lakes College’s summer learning programme.

The programme, which ran for three weeks, gave young people aged from 16 to 18 the opportunity to learn, gain skills and have fun while earning £50 per week.

Students tried their hand at courses such as art and design, catering and joinery to motor vehicle, sport and drugs awareness.

Cath Richardson, principal at Lakes College, said: “The summer learning programme is a fantastic opportunity for young people in the area, giving them experience in subject areas and allowing them to see what the college has to offer.”

Todd Bennett, 16, from Whitehaven, attended the learning programme for the full three weeks, he said: “It is better than sitting at home; I’ve learnt a lot and have met lots of new people.”

Kerry Hunton, 17, of Wastwater Avenue, joined the hairdressing course out of her own interest for hair styling.

She said: “It’s been really interesting and I’ve learned a lot about hairdressing in a short space of time.

“I was taught how to pin up different styles and use a range of equipment.

“It’s a good idea for young people to find out about what college is like and what a course could involve.”

The programme, which ran for three weeks, ends today.
