NEW Cumbria Junior champion Thomas Forster has revealed how European Seniors Tour star Peter Mitchell put him on the fairway to glory.
Forster, 18, landed the title on Sunday at Seascale with his three-over-par total of 145 (73, 72), finishing two shots ahead of Kendal’s Jamie MacDonald.
It capped an impressive year for the teenage horticultural engineer from Brampton, which has seen his handicap slashed from 3.4 to one.
Forster put his progress down to advice he received from Mitchell, a former European Tour player who now plays on the Seniors Tour.
He had a series lessons at Carlisle Driving Range earlier this year, and reckons he is reaping the benefits.
Forster said: “Peter and Jimmy Latta, who runs Carlisle Driving Range, changed my whole swing completely and correct it.
“I’ve had five sessions with Peter Mitchell this year and he puts everything over really well.
“He said he was quite impressed with my game and since seeing him I’m nearly off scratch.”
Forster, a member at Brampton, is a regular in the Cumbria junior team, and has now targeted a place in the men’s team.
