Lund, left , 36, who had a season each with Wigton and Kendal, was captain of the Penrith side for five years and a member of the Cumbria squad for four years.

Wigton coach Malcolm Brown described the signing as “a significant one” and means that the Lowmoor Road club will be going into the new season with six recognised props.

“It’s a position you can’t be too short of and it will also add a bit of competition for places.

“James has been a quality front row man for a number of years now so that experience is going to be invaluable to our club.”

Lund, who is a pal of Wigton skipper Greg Morton, had announced his retirement last year but came back at Christmas to finish the season at Penrith.

“I had said that I was finishing because of increased work commitments but they went better than anticipated which meant I did have a bit more time than I expected.

“Although we didn’t stay up in North One I did enjoy playing again but things have changed again and I feel as though I can’t commit myself to Penrith in North two East.”
