NEWS has just reached me of a huge 5lb ¼oz brown trout caught by Brampton Angling Association committee member Simon Arnott of Roadhead.

Simon was using a 7ft fly rod with a 3lb leader when the fish took his Greenwell Spider fly fished in Lanercost Bridge Pool on the River Irthing at about 10pm. This is the largest trout taken from BAA waters since a 6lb 4oz trout was taken by S Mason in 1983.

The great British Summer cut this year's Lowther Horse Driving Trials and Country Show short by a day and although it was a wet morning on Saturday for the competitors, the sun came out for the demonstrations on the Fishing Island during the afternoon and there was plenty going on for everyone throughout the day.

The Environment Agency kept youngsters entertained with activities as well as displays of their work. Stuart Broadhurst was busy on the junior fly casting clinic, Glyn Freeman and Clive Mitchelhill were also in great demand in the adult casting clinics.

Unfortunately heavy overnight rain meant the show had to be cancelled on Sunday but the results of Saturday's fly casting competitions were Junior Trout Fly Distance, 1st James Atkinson 36 ½ yards, 2nd James Fairlie 36 yards.

Junior Trout Accuracy 1st James Fairlie 16 points, 2nd James Atkinson 11 points. Junior Salmon Distance 1st James Hek 41 yards, 2nd James Fairlie 35 yards. Senior Trout Distance 1st Jon Allen 40 yards. Senior Trout Accuracy 1st Robert Richardson 14 points.

The only good news to come from Sunday's cancellation of Lowther was that Luke Raw, aged 13. managed to landed his first salmon. Luke had travelled to visit Lowther with his father who is game keeper on Blubber Houses Grouse Moor in North Yorkshire.

With the show's cancellation on Sunday Luke tried for salmon on the Park Broom beat of the river Eden and in terrible conditions on a dirty rising river he managed to land a 4lb grilse whilst spinning in the Willows. Gordon Jefferries has been amongst the sea trout again on the Lazonby Estate waters of the river Eden.

Gordon has recently landed three sea trout weighing between 2-2½lb, two were landed at Smithy Wath on a fly of his own making and one was landed at Hollinstown on a Cascade.

Patrick Arnold also recently landed a 3lb sea trout in the Gravel Bed and followed this with a 9lb salmon in the Wicket Pool.

Then on Tuesday morning Patrick landed an 8 pounder a grilse and finished off with a 15lb salmon in the Meadows using a Cascade fished on a single handed trout rod.

On the Low House Estate beats of the river Eden near Armathwaite last Friday Paul Askew landed a sea liced covered 10 pounder in Nichol Hole on a Rapala before landing a 5lb grilse at Beck End using the same tactics.

Paul was fishing with Low House regular Pom Davidson of Brough who landed a 10¼ pounder on a copper Toby in the Tail of Bransty. On Saturday Charlie Eggerton fished the Tail of Bransty with a Black and Red bottle nosed fly and landed a 12 pounder.

At Warwick Hall on Wednesday Nigel Lloyd took a fly caught 6 pounder in Crow Wood. Brigetta Paton landed a 12 pounder at the Garden Wall whilst spinning on Thursday; Colin Hudson landed a 4 pounder on a Flying C in the Rushes the same day.

On Sunday Paul Davidson also fished the Rushes and landed a seven-pounder on the fly.

On Tuesday all the action was in the House Pool with John Hindle landing a brace at 4 and 7lb and Brian Holland taking a 14-pounder, all caught on the Flying C.

Fourteen anglers fished Tuesday evening's match at Whins pond. Dave Wardman on peg 30 alternated pellet and brightly coloured maggot hookbaits on the feeder and found a good bream, a tench and an eel for 10lb 1oz.

This gave him first place and ten points making him the new league leader, his first time at the top.

In second place on peg 27 was Stainton artist Tim Gustard. Making a late run for a top six placing, Tim alternated pellet and mini boilie combined with pva bag and heavy feeder. He had two takes, a bream and a small common carp weighing a total of 9lb 4oz for second place.

Craig White on peg eight adopted the long pole and using maggot accumulated a mixed bag of roach, skimmers and tench for 7lb 15oz and third place.

Tony Whear targeted the silver fish on whip and pole and had 7lb 1oz for fourth, Jeff Whittle kept himself in touch with 6lb 8oz on the pole and Ian Corri got one point for sixth with 6lb 2oz of pole caught silver fish.
