WHILE the weather claimed much of the weekend’s cricket fixtures, the Under-15 games on Friday night managed to beat the rain and provide some notable performances.
CUMBRIA JUNIOR CRICKET LEAGUE
Perhaps the most outstanding effort was from Jamie Bell (Whitehaven) who claimed five wickets for 12 against Egremont including four in the final over of the match when Egremont needed just five runs to win. Earlier Lewis Gribbin appeared to have got Egremont on track for a win with an innings of 29
In the same Division, Cockermouth Green posted a massive 158 for 6 against Workington Blue with retirements from Fisher, Slinger, Smith and McAvoy. Tom Smith’s 30 came in just eight scoring shots. In reply Daniel Rice and Jamie Clubley both scored 14 as Workington finished on 64 for 4.
Also claiming five wickets was Martin Rickerby (Carlisle) in his side’s five-wicket win over Denton Holme.
Workington's main under-15 team and Seascale go head-to-head on Friday in a decider for the Western Premier League which Seascale currently lead by one point.
Workington defeated Cleator last Friday by five wickets and with only a few balls to spare. James Rodgers was the catalyst behind Cleator’s score of 101 for 5, posting a quickfire 30 while Nick Wood (33) and Liam Ryan (also 33) led the home side’s reply. Rodgers and Ryan had earlier in the week been among the runs for a Northern District’s side.
As well as the final round of Under-15 fixtures, this weekend also sees the next round of the Under-13 Strollers Ten10 Cup with venues at Penrith, Cockermouth and Workington each looking to provide one of three finalists.

UNDER 14 DISTRICT GAME
The first ever century in a district game was scored last week at Wigton as District teams representing the North and South of the County contested an Under-14 match.
The North won the toss and elected to bat losing the wicket of Scott Saunders (Cleator ) early for a duck.
The innings was built around James Rodgers (also Cleator) who batted superbly to make a 100 off the fourth ball of the last over. He batted with great maturely and only offered one chance when dropped by the keeper on 59.
He hit one six and 16 fours in his innings, in particular punishing anything short. Liam Ryan (Workington) batted well for 30 and shared in a partnership of 87 for the second wicket with Rodgers. Mikey Hill (Wigton) also supported James well with a well paced 31 and the innings closed on 203-5 off the 45 overs. The pick of the South bowlers was Brad Heron with 1-47 from his allotted nine overs.
In reply the South were pegged back early on with tight bowling from Aaron Mansergh (Wigton) and Jack Barwise (Seascale) and at 46-2 off 20 overs they were well behind the clock. Ryan Gilmour (31) and Ben Wheeler (17) tried to inject some increase in the scoring rate but it was not until number 11 Jack Kilshaw came to the crease with a brisk 27 that any impetus was made in the scoring.
The North held all their catches and the wickets were shared around by their bowlers with Barwise (1), Jack Burgess (Workington, 1), Saunders (1), Ross Leeson (Cleator, 1), Jonny Irving (Workington, 1 ), Josh Dixon (Wigton, 2), Rodgers (1) and Ryan (1). The South were finally bowled out for 146.
