Top young speedway hopefuls set for Derwent Park

Some of the brightest prospects in British speedway will be converging on west Cumbria next week-end.

The British Under-15’s Championship is being staged on August 16 at the Northside training track for the second year in succession.

The Northside training track committee are organising the event for the Speedway Control Board and are hoping speedway fans will make a day of it.

Northside official Judith Lomas said: “We start at 3pm and then four hours later Workington Comets have a top-four crunch match with Edinburgh in the Premier League.

“I know quite a few people who are coming to watch the kids in action and then staying in town for the Comets match afterwards.”

The Northside leg will be the second round of the Championship after the first round was switched at late notice from Redcar to Stoke because of weather problems.

But it won’t be the final round, the one which decides the championship but instead Northside will put on the second of four rounds in the series.

The youngsters travel south to ride at Weymouth on September 13 while the venue for the final round on October 10 still has to be decided.

John Resch won the first round at Stoke, followed by Daniel Greenwood and Jason Garrity. Both Greenwood and Garrity are expected to contest the Northside round.

Garrity is the explosive youngster from Manchester who impressed the Workington fans when he went round Derwent Park before a meeting last year. He is the current Northside track record holder.

Last year’s winner, James Sarjeant was having his first look at the track and the former Sheffield mascot only dropped one point in his first race before going on to collect four straight wins.

POPULAR Pole Tomasz Piszcz is back in British speedway with his former Workington boss Graham Drury.

Piszcz has not ridden in this country since riding for Drury at Workington in the 2006 season but he’s answered a call to ride for the injury hit Brummies over the last three months of the season.

He made a quiet debut last night for the Brummies with only a second place in his fourth and final ride to earn him two points on the night.

He had seemed uncomfortable with the Perry Barr track on his first sight of it but he did lead for two laps in his final ride before being passed by Ben Barker.

Workington reserve Charles Wright was a guest for the Stoke Potters and he scored three points from three rides. He finished second to Kyle Legault in one of the races where Piszcz was last.

Birmingham had been 12 points adrift with three heats left and almost put off a rescue act before going under 47-46.

The Brummies have been well documented as having the worst injury-run in speedway and Drury has made three new additions to the squad. But to make way for the new arrivals Drury has also produced the axe.

James Birkinshaw (another ex-Comet), Lee Smart and Jack Hargreaves are free to find other clubs.

Piszcz has been recruited by boss Drury along with Jay Herne, son of Brummies legend Phil, and James Cockle.

Yes, it would be fresh and healthy

No, I don't have the time so I'll stick to my tins and processed stuff
