Wilson’s 57 helps to stun lofty Caldbeck

Yet another weekend decimated by the weather, with only two matches taking place in the top three divisions on Saturday.

Caldbeck, only six points behind Penrith II at the top of the table had the opportunity to reduce the deficit as Penrith II match at Scotby didn't even start.

However, Edenhall had other ideas as Matthew Wilson (57) and David Marshall (39) set a competitive target, well defended by the bowling of Jamie Armstrong, Andrew Gate and Stuart Davison which saw the best side win and Caldbeck twenty runs short.

The two basement clubs met at Stainton, where the away side, Nunwick increased their chance of survival with a six wicket win.

Not as straightforward as it sounds, it took an unbeaten five wicket partnership between Adam Collin (75no) and Dougie Parker (45no) to claim the points.

However, all teams in the bottom half of the table will be looking anxiously at other results in the five remaining weekends.

Sunday saw the only match of the next two divisions where a strengthened Appleby III beat Temple Sowerby by seven wickets, although the latter maintain a healthy position at the top of the table.

Teams in the Third Division are obviously made of sterner stuff and there was virtually a full programme over the two days. Main beneficiary was Penrith Academy, who won twice, by eight wickets, then six, and thus draw level with Rockcliffe at the top of the table.

The highest individual scores came at Wigton where Billy Ray (83) shone for the home side, only to be eclipsed by Adam Cairns (85no) and Mike Armstrong (68) as Lanercost II won by nine wickets.

Stainton II's season continues to nosedive after a six wicket defeat by a schizophrenic Caldbeck II, who had lost badly the week before at Irthing Vale II.

The largest diffence in score occurred at Nunwick were Penrith Wanderers defeated by over 200 runs, as James Bradley (65) Trevor Wilson (62) and Will Thompson (47) took advantage of a weakened side.

The day will not be fondly remembered by Wanderers captain Dougie Fowles who took no further part in proceedings after dropping a boundary catch, cut his hand in the process, and then spent most of his afternoon in Penrith hospital having five stitches inserted.
