Stonehewer fit to race against Somerset

Carl Stonehewer has been declared fit to race for Workington Comets in their crunch Premier League match tonight.

The experienced Comets’ ace has taken a week out because of a damaged ankle, in order to race in tonight’s big clash with League leaders Somerset Rebels.

Stoney was hurt at Edinburgh last Friday and after riding through the pain barrier to help Comets win the Fours on Saturday opted to take a week out.

He missed guest bookings at Belle Vue, Sheffield and Edinburgh in order to give himself every chance of making tonight’s line-up.

He’s also picked up a guest booking tomorrow night when the Rebels complete their northern tour at Ashfield against the Glasgow Tigers.

Stonehewer has regularly slotted in for the Tigers during the absence of Australian star Shane Parker, who is due back in action shortly.

Comets team manager Ian Thomas said: “Stoney is a good professional and he knew that he wouldn’t be doing himself justice riding in the state he was after his efforts on Saturday.

“The foot and ankle appear to have taken a battering but fortunately nothing has been broken and although he suffered really bad bruising he will be fine again this week. He said his foot was as black as a pint of Guinness.”

Workington will be tracking seven riders tonight against the Rebels as their facility for Tomi Reima has now expired.

Former world champion Gary Havelock is booked as a guest for the injured Daniel Nermark, who has targeted a return to action at the end of the month against Berwick Bandits. A second unfamiliar face tonight will be at number two, Gary Beaton, 21, a Glasgow asset who rides for the Redcar Cubs in the Conference League.

The action starts at 7pm.
