Simon’s on the spot for Penrith success

MANY of Cumbria's top riders were in action and on top form at the Penrith Show, including the Midas-touched Simon Buckley who came third and fourth in the Discovery with Cassanet and Wizardlea, then won the Newcomers with Cassanet and topped the day off with second place in the Foxhunter/1.20 Open with Silvano.

Over we go: Richard Nichol who won the Discovery at Penrith Show

Richard Nichols is always one of the spectators' favourites as he can be guaranteed to throw everything he's got into the contest. And it paid off for him as he took Katie Daley to victory in the Discovery.

Coral Mowbray on Corinthos took the Foxhunter/1.20 Open honours ahead of some very hot competition.

Meanwhile, in the Juniors section the day belonged to Josh Rooney who took first and second in the 128/138 Handicap with In the Dark and Mr JK - and to Susan Farrell who took first and second in the Junior Foxhunter/1.10 Open with Miss Riot and Oh, I.

Josh Rooney's right on top of his game at the moment, having come away from a recent junior show at Rowallan with four wins, three seconds and too many other placings to count. He's also qualified Mr JK and In the Dark for the Scope Debut class.

Cumbrian riders have also been making the headlines at this years Longines Royal International Horse Show. Jonathan Dixon riding David Dixon's Sanne won the Novice Futurity Championship, while Rachel Walker riding her own Tanon came second in the Winter B & C Final.

Denise Richardson's matinee-idol stallion Maximillian Maali has secured a place at the prestigious British Eventing Young Horse Championships at Tweseldown in October after qualifying in the six-year-old section at Strathallan.

Denise says she's delighted with his performances this year - and is aiming to go Intermediate in September.

Ruth Edge was kept busy at the Knaptoft International in Leicestershire, riding no less than nine different horses in the various sections.

Best results of the event came with first place in the AI section with Mayhem, third in the OI with Kilkee and 6th in the OI with Zakarius.

The Cumberland Farmers' Hunt (South) Branch of the Pony Club (CFHS) has changed the date of its Summer Show at Brougham - it's now being staged this Sunday (August 3) instead of the 17th as originally planned.

The show is open to all members of The Pony Club, with classes for all ages and abilities.

Evening show-jumping has started again after a break at Cumwhinton -with ponies on Tuesdays and horses on Thursdays.

Clear rounds are held on both evenings from half past six, with classes getting underway at seven. More details from Peter Bainbridge on 07712 130195.
