Jason Mossop stepped off a plane from Australia yesterday – straight in to Workington Town’s squad to travel to Hunslet tomorrow (3pm).
The centre played a starring role for Wales in their Student World Cup campaign Down Under, and boss Dave Rotheram reckons he will have benefited from the experience.
“I’ve had a text from Jason and he’s had a fantastic time,” said Rotheram. “Wales exceeded all expectations in reaching the semi-final and will be pretty pleased with themselves.
“Jason’s been in a full-time training environment for three weeks, and he’s got used to winning. Hopefully we are getting back an invigorated and enthusiastic player.”
Mossop slots back in to the centres with Mark McCully switching to No 13 for Ryan Campbell, who misses out for family reasons.
“Mark played at loose-forward for a couple of seasons in St Helens’ Academy team,” Rotheram added.
“He’s a very athletic bloke and this will get him a little closer to the action. After Matty Tunstall, he’s probably our top off-loader.”
Hawks boss Graeme Hallas has more injury headaches to overcome after Monday's disappointing defeat against London Skolars.Nathan Larvin (broken hand) is definitely out while Karl Gunney is doubtful with concussion. Ben Lawton suffered a suspected broken leg.
Hunslet lie bottom of NL2 but enjoyed a 23-20 win at Derwent Park last month, and Rotheram believes they will be desperate to avoid the wooden spoon.
News this week that teams finishing third to eighth will contest the play-offs has given Town a much stronger chance of taking part in the series.
“We are eighth and still in there,” Rotheram said. “It’s up to us to hold the position.”Fans are invited next Friday night to a Twenty20 cricket match in aid of prop Tunstall’s testimonial. The action starts at 6pm at Cockermouth Cricket Club. Admission costs £1.
