Hitman Karl returns to Brunton Park

Karl Hawley admits he’s uncertain if Carlisle United fans who once idolised him will give him a warm reception when he spearheads the Preston attack at Brunton Park today.
Hawley quit Brunton Park on a free transfer in 2007 after turning down a new deal with Carlisle. Carlisle were unable to cash in on the striker – top scorer with 12 goals in the 2006-07 season – as he was able to walk away on a free transfer to join former Carlisle boss Paul Simpson at Deepdale.
Hawley, who returns to United for the first time today in a pre-season friendly, said: “It will be interesting to see what kind of reaction I get.
“But I’m looking forward to going back, seeing some of the lads who were there when I was, and hopefully playing against them.”
Winger Joe Anyinsah, who spent three months on loan at United in the early part of last season, will also be included in the Preston squad.
The 23-year-old is hoping to play his way into Preston boss Alan Irvine’s plans for next season and has been involved in Preston’s friendlies against Chorley, Morecambe and Everton.
He said: “I'm definitely hoping for a future at Preston.
“I've been away on loan for most of the time but hopefully this is the season when I break through and make a name for myself at Preston.
“It was slightly frustrating having to go out on loan a few times but everything happens for a reason and I picked up some great experience at the other clubs I've played for.
“Now hopefully I can use that experience to benefit me here. I'm enjoying pre-season here, the gaffer is good to work for, I'm not just saying that, the other lads will tell you the same. Training is very organised and I'm looking forward to the season.”
