It’s a relief as Cumberland Show survives cancellation fears

It’S TURNING into a summer of mixed fortunes as far as the weather’s concerned – not as big a washout as we all had to suffer last year, but still throwing enough wet stuff at us to cause considerable disappointment.

Congratulations: Molly Waugh, Holly Wybergh, Amy Wybergh and Katie Merrall, the CFHN Novice Eventing Team who came third at Cumwhinton at the Pony Club Area Eventing Qualifier

The biggest casualty in this region so far was the loss of the Cumwhinton Horse Trials. The organisers held off from cancelling till the last possible moment, hoping it might be able to go ahead, but in the end had no real option.

Sadly the organisers of the Gilsland Show which was scheduled for Sunday have now had to make the same decision, following a spell of miserable weather which has left the ground too waterlogged.

The Cumberland Show organisers also had a few anxious moments in the run-up to the big day, but happily this premier event did go ahead, and apart from a few minor drizzles, serious rain stayed off for most of the day.

Most of the honours in the BSJA showjumping section went to local riders, including Helena Pedrosa who won the Junior Newcomers/1m Open with Just The Two Of Us and Janet Smith who took the Senior Discovery with Of To A T against a very strong class, coming in ahead of Katie Walker, Nigel Springer and Sally Skelton.

Meanwhile Amy Ion and her pony Perfect Puzzle took first place in the Smiths of Whiteinch Scope Qualifier at the Blue Sky centre.

Anyone looking for information on Area 14 events and members should note that they have a new website address - it’s now www.area14showjumping.co.uk.

Cumwhinton was back up and running for the Pony Club Area Eventing qualifier where the Cumberland Farmers Hunt North Pony Club had a successful day with their Novice Team.

Amy Wybergh on Ferdie, Katie Merrall on Lizzy, Molly Waugh on Bromfield Spark and Holly Wybergh on Chandaem Pippity who have been trained by Susan Bowman finished third overall and just missed out on a qualifying place for the Pony Club Final.

Amy Wybergh did secure a place in the finals however, after coming first in her arena- Molly Waugh and Holly Wybergh where both placed 5th in their arenas.

In eventing, Ruth Edge took first place in the Pre-Novice at Stafford with Applejack 11, ending on her dressage score of just 26, and second in the Five Year Old section with Elite Opposition, again closing on her dressage score of 33. Ursulette unfortunately had four faults in the Pre-Novice showjumping, marring an otherwise clean sheet, but the dressage result of 33 was enough to secure a fifth place.

Cumbria's highly successful Appaloosa stallion Warrior of Saltcreek has added yet more trophies to an already groaning display cabinet for his owners Brian and Sheila Wilson of Seaville near Silloth. They took him to Myserscough where he won the Champion stallion, the Ridden Championship and the Reserve Championship for all male horses.

Chef John Crouch says we should forage our food from nature. Would you ever do that?

Yes, it would be fresh and healthy

No, I don't have the time so I'll stick to my tins and processed stuff

Maybe, if I could find the time to go and find it
