Motor club’s a star of show

THE very successful Cumberland Show was a showcase for the countryside and much of what goes on in it – including motorsport which helps boost the Cumbrian economy.
One of the car clubs which stages local events, Spadeadam Car Club, had a stand to show people what motorsport was all about.
To make their stand more attractive they held a competition during the day to find who was the quickest to change a wheel.
There was also a rally simulator where visitors could attempt to get the fastest time of the day.
The two attractions raised £303.01 for the North Air Ambulance and the club was grateful to Eddie Stobart Motorsport, John Parker Associates and East Coast Karting as well as club members for help with the prizes.
The eventual scores on the doors for the wheel changing were 1st The Gretna Boys (N. Taylor/J.MacIlwraith) with a time of 1:38.44, 2nd The Lockerbie Oldies (J.Robson/D. McGarrie) 1:54.91and 3rd The Fat Boys (M.Shaw/C.Saville) 2:09.97 with thanks to Tim Finch for the loan of his Mitsubishi rally car..
The fastest time of the day on the simulator was Dave Fuller in a time of 1:07.86.
Nearly 200 miles south and even faster in the forests round Swansea was Dumfries rally ace David Bogie when he took part in the Swansea Bay National Rally last Saturday.
Driving his Mitsubishi Evo 9 rally car with Hawick co-driver Kevin Rae, the crew finished sixth overall and the first in the Mitsubishi Evo Challenge as well as class Group N in a closely fought battle over 65 miles of stages.
This was the second win in a row for Bogie in the Evo Challenge and his third victory of the season.
Unfortunately I held charity event at home last Sunday and for the first time in a while I missed the Hutton classic car event hosted by Lord and Lady Inglewood.
From the pre-publicity it seemed that there was to be a good entry and I certainly watched my near neighbour Peter Kelso head that way in his immaculate Field Marshall, single pot tractor which as I child scared me to death when it was driven by Peter’s father.
However, the sun shone and from all reports it was a good event, so I will look forward to next year when I hope I will be able to attend.
Having just got my entry for the Pennine Classic Tour run by the Wigton Motor Club on August 16, as well as confirmation of my place on the Solway Jaguar stand the following day, Sunday August 18 for the long-established Cumbria Classic Car Show at Dalemain House, I have had to reluctantly decline.
My Forth Road Bridge Mk2 Jag will sadly not be ready in time since we pulled out the dash for re-veneering and all the instruments to be refurbished because the clock didn’t work and the speedometer flicked alarming form 40mph to 90mph!
However, thanks to SC Parts the instruments are back in full working order but it will be some weeks before we get the dash back.
So I will have to sneak into Dalemain in my Avensis and sadly use her to go to the Goodwood Revival in September as I intend missing neither events, the highlights of the classic car year.
