Annan tracking Reds favourite Hewson

Workington Reds favourite Dave Hewson is being tracked by Scottish League newcomers Annan Athletic.

Reds director Alec Graham confirmed that Annan were looking at the versatile ace, though Workington are keen to keep him at Borough Park.

“They have expressed an interest,” Graham said. “I haven’t heard anything to say that he’s going. Maybe he’s thinking about it.

“It’s down to him if he goes, as we have always said we wouldn’t stand in anyone’s way if they wanted to leave.

“Dabber’s a key member of our squad, and it’s only injuries that have held him back. But he’s always returned from them. He’s a courageous lad.”

There are strong rumours that Annan are targeting Cumbrian talent for the new campaign, and Graham added: “We are probably able to compete with them on the wages front. I personally think Conference North is a higher standard than Scottish Division Three.”

Ex-Reds players Craig Summersgill and Lee Hoolickin have recently joined Annan, while Alan Inglis has also returned north of the border following a loan spell with Athletic last term. And Derek Townsley has taken the assistant manager’s job at the new Scottish League outfit.

Reds tonight make the trip to Holker Street to face Barrow, for what’s likely to be the only meeting between the clubs this year, following the Bluebirds’ promotion to the Blue Square Premier.
