Workington swoop for Storm teenager Scott

Workington Town have signed local amateur product Robert Scott on a two-year contract.

Boss Dave Rotheram has been impressed with the Salterbeck Storm wing/full-back’s desire to turn out for Town.

“He’s an ex-scholarship player of ours who has performed well in the reserve team for the past couple of years, so he has earned the contract,” Rotheram said.

“Robert’s a local boy of 19 who wants to play for the club, though it’s a bit earlier to say when he can push on.

“We are pretty rich with outside backs at the minute, and he knows it’s going to be a long learning process, but let’s hope we can develop him within the next couple of years.”

He is the second reserve-grade product that Town have signed on pro forms within the past fortnight. Ex-Hensingham hooker Jamie Sharp also penned a two-year deal following a string of stand-out performances for the reserves.

Town fans are invited to Derwent Park on Friday night to see club great Eppie Gibson inducted in to the club’s Hall of Fame.

Gibson’s Town career launched in August 1947 and he went on to score 145 tries in 335 matches for Workington.

Two of his most memorable touch downs came in the Championship final win over Warrington in May, 1951. He also featured in the Challenge Cup final triumph against Featherstone the following season and will be joined in the Tom Mitchell Lounge on Friday by ex-team-mates from Town’s golden age.

It is vice-presidents event but places are available to other supporters interested in paying tribute to the former centre.

Tickets cost £15 and include a hot and cold buffet. For further information, contact Tony Boyd on 07764880105, or the club on 01900 603609.
