Holidays weaken Reds’ strikeforce

Workington Reds will be two strikers down for this weekend’s Annan tournament with Jonny Wright and Andrew Hardman both on holiday.

Alan Gray is available for today’s opener against Annan but not tomorrow’s clash with Stranraer or Spartans, while Craig Johnston is not able to play today but will feature on Sunday.

“We’ve had 10 training sessions and two games to date, so after another two or three matches we’ll hopefully be ready to go for the start of the season,” said assistant manager Viv Busby.

“We haven’t gone too daft in training because we don’t want any silly injuries, but all the lads are looking pretty fit.

“You like to win all your matches, but pre-season’s about getting match-fit and getting players back in to the swing of things.”

Reds face Annan at noon today with Spartans taking on Stranraer at 3pm. The losers of these two games play off tomorrow at noon, with the winners meeting in the final at 3pm.

Each member of Workington’s 17-man squad is expected to feature in at least one of the games.

Two new teenagers joined the Reds squad in training this week. Left-sided Ben Pringle, formerly with Gretna, spent part of last season with Newcastle Blue Star. Ryan Birbeck is an 18-year-old centre-half from Appleby. Neither will feature this weekend.

Reds’ annual golf day at Maryport raised over £2,500 for the club. Seaton pair Steven Hodgson, off a handicap of five, and Jon Wallace, off 12, took first prize, from among 151 entries, of an all-expenses-paid weekend at the exclusive Matfen Hall, near Newcastle upon Tyne.

Included are two rounds of golf and the use of a BMW for the weekend. A total of £2,500 in prizes was handed out and Craig Johnston proved the leading Reds player.

The golf day has now raised almost £20,000 for the club over the last six years.
