Carlisle anglers have plenty to carp about

PETE Armstrong’s recent carp fishing trip to the Croix Blanche complex in Northern France, with fellow Carlisle angler Andy Robinson, proved successful with the pair landing seven carp over 30lb.

Pete landed four fish over 30lb, his two biggest weighing 35lb and 34lb 4oz, he also had two mid-20lb mirrors.

Andy had five fish, three of which were over 30lb the biggest being 36lb. Pete caught using mainline NRG boilies fished snowman style over large beds of particles, all runs apart from one coming through the night.

Pete’s biggest fish fell to freelined luncheon meat after he found a small group of fish feeding in the margins in a quiet corner of lake during the middle of the day, when hooked it pulled Pete into the margins such was its power.

Leg five of the £7,000 Broom series sponsored by Preston Innovations and Annan’s Queensberry Arms Hotel and fished at Broom Fishery near Annan on Sunday, was won by John Busfield, from Longtown. His bag of 27lbs 12ozs gave him his second consecutive win in the series and puts him in ninth place.

John fished against the marginal reeds from peg 46 on the Square Pond, using paste on the hook and loose feeding pellets, his wining bag consisted of roach along with ghost, mirror and koi carp.

The 20 anglers with the most accumulated points will compete for the first prize of £1,000 on August 31.

The recent Carlisle and District Coarse Angling Club Summer League match at Broom saw Carlisle’s Pete Brown take first place with 13lb 14oz.

Second was Keswick’s Bob Youdale with 10lb 4oz and third was John Brooks with 8lb 2oz.

Eighteen anglers fished the ‘King of Whins’ summer league on Tuesday evening,

Glen Martin used chocolate flavoured boilies in conjunction with a PVA bag at distance to weigh in two good bream and a tench for 12lb 4oz and first place.

Jeff Whittle was second with 10lb 10oz to put him just a couple of points behind Mike Clusker in the league table.

Mike found a good selection of skimmers and a couple of bream for 9lb 12oz and third place keeping him at the top of the league.

Steve Cooper fished whip and maggot landing 8lb 4oz of silver fish for fourth.

On Sunday Whins Pond hosts a float-only open match. All are welcome and the draw is 8.00 am prompt and fishing from 9am until 3pm.

On the River Eden at Warwick Hall, Paul Gaynor fished a copper Toby in Howards Hole and landed a 6lb grilse.

Keith Brownson fished the House Pool landing a 10½ pounder whilst spinning and a 9 pounder on the worm, while Warwick Hall Keeper Charlie Alderson also landed a brace, a 9 pounder at Irthing Foot and a 13 pounder in Jackies Stream both were taken on the fly. David Bamford also landed a salmon at Irthing Foot on Monday; the fish a 12 pounder was also taken on the fly.

Earleir this week, John Gaynor landed a 5lb grilse at Irthing Foot on the fly.

Three salmon were caught on the Low House Estate waters of the river Eden on Monday.

Sea anglers have been enjoying good catches of mackerel recently from Whitehaven Piers and elsewhere along the coast this summer anglers have been catching a better stamp of bass.

As well as the usual schoolies more fish in the 4-7lb class are being landed this year.

Jeff McAllister of Maryport and District SAC landed one of 6lb 2oz together with a schoolie during a recent league match on Maryport promenade and a White Horse SAC member reported an 8lb bass from the St Bee's area.

Scouts of the 13th Carlisle Scout Group (Trinity School) spent Saturday fishing Crofton Lake thanks to the members of the Carlisle and District Coarse Angling Club.

Many of the Scouts had never had the opportunity to do any kind of fishing before and even the torrential rain failed to dampen their enthusiasm, nearly all the Scouts managed to catch a variety of fish including perch and roach on the day.
