Sharp didn't think too long about Town offer

New recruit Jamie Sharp has revealed he was quick out of the blocks when given the chance to turn pro with Workington Town.

Dave Rotheram: ‘It’s a chance for Cumbrian players to show what they can do in one of the best rugby league stadiums in the world’

The teenage Hensingham hooker was offered a two-year deal after proving his worth in Town’s reserve-grade this term.

He said: “They asked me at five o’clock and I rang back at nine. I didn’t have to think about it.

“I’ve really enjoyed it at the club and learned a lot. It’s been a progression from last season to this, and there’s been a vast improvement in my personal ability, playing in a professional environment.

“Hopefully I can break in to the first-team this year and cement a place for next year.”

Sharp, a talented goal-kicker, was named in Dave Rotheram’s 19-man squad for last weekend’s game at Rochdale, though did not make the final cut.

He faces formidable competition for the hooking role from Shaun Lunt but is a big admirer of the first-choice No 9.

“It’s everything about how he plays,” said Sharp, who thanked his family for their support through his career. “He’s a good role model.”

Meanwhile, Workington centre Jason Mossop missed out on a place in the Student World Cup final when Wales went down 26-10 to hosts Australia in their last-four clash. Sheffield Eagles winger Rob Worrincy scored Wales’ only try.

They now face New Zealand in the third-place play-off after the defending champs went down 30-22 to England.
