Future is bright for girls

THE second year of the County Under-16 Girls’ League proved to be a competitive season with the Champions decided by one point.

Crown Newlaithes and Abbeytown Girls were involved in the hunt for the title throughout the season. Crown Newlaithes started the season exceptionally well, getting out of the blocks and putting a cushion of points between them and the rest of the league.

The second half of the season saw Abbeytown close the gap which made the end of season finale a nail biting affair with both teams gunning for the title.

Crown Newlaithes were the eventual winners on 36 points, winning the league in their debut year.

The County Cup

Tesco showed their commitment to grassroots football by sponsoring County competitions in the girl’s game at Under-14 and Under-16 for the first time with a Regional and National competition awaiting the winners.

The Under-16s County Cup final saw last season’s runners-up Inter Wattsfield take on Abbeytown. The final was also a good sign of the development of females in the game, with four female officials taking charge.

Inter Wattsfield won the County Cup following a tight game which was decided by an early goal.

Both Inter and Abbeytown went on to the Regional finals in Manchester with Abbeytown representing Cumberland and Inter representing Westmorland.

The League Cup

Abbeytown finally got their hands on some silver ware having been runners up in the league and cup. Abbeytown beat Dalton Girls 3-1 in the final of the League Cup at Frenchfields to round off the girls Under-16 season.

The Future

Next season will see seven women’s teams compete in the inaugural Cumbria women’s league.

Abbeytown, Carleton Rovers, Dalton Ladies, Harraby Ladies, Kendal Town, Penrith AFC Development, Whitehaven Ladies Reserves have all registered and are waiting for the season to begin in September.

Ambleside, Ingleton and Wattsfield will be playing friendly fixtures for this season. For more information on this, please contact Helen Aitchison, Girls & Women’s Football Development Officer on 01900 872310.
