Buckley’s making the most of the summer

This summer may not be winning any prizes as far as the weather’s concerned but it’s turning out to be a memorable one for Kendal’s Simon Buckley.

Shrugging of injury: Margaret Kendall, winner of the Newcomers, pictured in action at Greenlands

Having just secured a place at HOYS with Gordon Graham’s stallion Jericho after winning the Foxhunter Second Round at the Area 15 show, the pair won the HOYS Grade C qualifier at Champions of Scotland at the weekend with one of only two double clears.

And that success came hot on the heels of winning the Renault Jump at the Royal Highland Show with his own Worrior Van Dingeshof.

Incidentally the other double clear was by Douglas Duffin riding Richard Jenkinson’s Cameron Poe who also qualify.

Cumbrian riders were in sparkling form elsewhere, particularly those who took part in the two day Area 12 show at Langley Park, the home of event rider Jamie Atkinson.

Shrugging off a shoulder injury suffered in a fall the previous weekend, Margaret Kendall won the Newcomers on Kec Yokohama.

Then the pair came second to Amy Cowin and Whoopy BJ in the Scope 1.05m Adventurer Qualifier.

Margaret then rode Wellview Aldatus into fourth place in the 1.15m Smarter Builders Members Cup and into fifth in the Classic Sport Horse 1.20m/Open class to claim her third Scope qualifying ticket of the day.

Meanwhile Kate Watson and Unarette took third in the Discovery, then went on to win the Paddy O’Brien memorial trophy with one of only two double clears in the Discovery with Jonathon Dixon coming third.

Missing out on a place in the Olympic eventing team when it was almost within grasp must have been a crushing blow for Ruth Edge, but she’s managed to rise above it.

Competing at the Barbury International in Wiltshire for the first time, Ruth rode PC Wilson into first place in the two-star class - ending the event on her dressage score of 37.8.

As you might guess from his name, the German-bred gelding was once destined for a career as a police horse, but showed talent as soon as he was introduced to eventing and Ruth took over the ride in April, bonding very swiftly with the 12-year-old chestnut.

Closer to home and Inglewood held the UK Chasers and Riders regional dressage finals at the weekend. Local riders Stacy Ritson, Hayley Graham, Rachel Graham and Nicolle Murry all secured places at the national finals at Melton Mowbray in September.

This weekend all local eventing eyes will be turning to Cumwhinton for the horse trials hosted by the Bainbridge family. It’s always an extremely popular event, attracting riders from considerable distances as well as being a great favourite with local competitors. It’s also a guaranteed great day out for spectators, with plenty of variety in a beautiful location.

Chef John Crouch says we should forage our food from nature. Would you ever do that?

Yes, it would be fresh and healthy

No, I don't have the time so I'll stick to my tins and processed stuff

Maybe, if I could find the time to go and find it
