PENRITH hitman Michael Reed’s hopes of matching a post-war club scoring record could be scuppered by injury.
The former Carlisle United trainee is only one goal away from Albert Clapperton’s record of 27 league strikes in a season.
Clapperton achieved his feat in 1966-67.
Reed has scored 26 in 26 games this season but has missed the last four matches with an ankle injury, and tomorrow’s trip to Hebburn Town is the final game of the season.
Boss Dave Heslop, who made a playing comeback at the age of 49 last week because of mounting injury problems, hopes Reed will return tomorrow.
“We’ll make a late decision on Michael. If he had steered clear of injuries he would have smashed the record by now but 26 goals in 26 games is still a fantastic achievement,” said Heslop.
