Longtown's Busfield sweeps up first prize at Broom

Longtown matchman John Busfield landed the fourth leg of the £7,000 Broom series with a carp catch of 20lbs 2ozs.

John drew peg 83 on the Queensberry water but with gusting winds and continual driving rain, he could only use to seven metres pole. His win took him to 11th place in the series.

The top 20 anglers will compete for the first prize of £1,000 on August 31.

Thirty-five anlgers fished Sunday’s event, which is sponsored by Preston Innovations and Annan's Queensberry Arms Hotel.

Other section winners on the day were: The Square, George Bell 18lbs 12ozs; The Canal, Tony Ball 5lbs; Bruce's Acre, Darren Ferguson 14lbs 2ozs. They all collected ten points each and the current point's leader for the series is Stephen Hunter with 34 points.

The Whins Pond monthly open float only matches are now in full swing and the next will go ahead this Sunday.

Winning weights at the Penrith day ticket water are regularly in double figures and carp, bream and tench have been needed to win the last few events.

Pole and waggler are the only methods allowed during the six-hour match and anglers wanting to try their luck are invited along this Sunday.

The draw will take place at 8am with fishing from 9am until 3pm. The cost of the match is £10 and that includes £5 pools.

On Saturday, there were three salmon caught on the Crosby beat of the Moorhouse Estate water of the river Eden.

But James Long had the best of the sport, after catching and returning a smaller fish earlier in the day James hooked and landed a superb sea liced 19 pound cock salmon. Both fish were caught on the fly.

Also in action on Saturday was Carlisle's Gary Kulaszewski.

After getting soaked to the skin in the heavy rain Gary went home for a change of clothes before returning to the Carlisle Angling Association stretch of the river Eden and fishing on into dusk.

Gary's persistence paid off, for at 9.15pm just as the light was beginning to fade Gary hooked and landed a lively 15½ pounder using a Silver Doctor fly.

Also on Saturday Nick Marriner landed a 5lb grilse on the fly at Crow Wood at Warwick Hall. The Warwick Hall stretch also produced a 10 pounder to Martin Lee last week.

Martin caught his fish on the fly in Jackies. Geoff Berry from Carlisle landed a 12lb salmon on the Lazonby Estate waters of the river Eden, last Thursday, and Pom Davidson of Brough landed his first salmon of the season on the Low House water of the River Eden near Armathwaite on Friday.

Fishing a Toby in the Tail of Bransty Pom hooked and landed a lively 7½ pounder. On Tuesday Winston Collins landed a 12 pounder from the College beat of the Eden near Lazonby.

Millom anglers recently enjoyed a good bass fishing session at Drigg; fishing at high water they had already landed nine bass up to 4 lb in weight when Bob Coulson of Millom decided to have one last cast and hooked a 9½ lb bass.

Tarnside Sea Anglers have held two matches recently the first on Braystones beach was won by Heather Rimmer who landed a 2lb 8oz bass. Heather's Husband Alan took second place with a 1lb 1 oz eel. Elliebob Blacklock, aged four, won the junior section with a 1lb 2oz eel.

The club's second match was fished at Workington pier on Saturday this match was won by Aka Rowlinson with a 12lb 2oz bag of flounders and coalfish.

Alan Rimmer was back amongst the eels, all 11½ lb of them to take second place reversing roles on his wife Heather who took third place with a 10 lb 4oz bag of flounders and eels.

Elliebob Blacklock seems to be taking over from her brother Ross as the new kid on the Tarnside block, winning the junior section once again with two eels and two flounders for 4lb 4oz.

Volunteers are welcome to the Eden Rivers Trust's Himalayan balsam pulling day at Lanercost Bridge on the River Irthing tomorrow, meet at 10.30am to help eradicate this invasive alien, for more details phone 01768 866788.
