It’s simple for Simon as he lands £3,500 prize at Highland fling

CUMBRIAN based BSJA riders came away from this years Royal Highland Show with more than a fistful of rosettes. Simon Buckley and Worrior Van Dingeshof had particular reason to celebrate.

Riding the nine year old gelding, Simon won the Renault Jump, the only double clear from a total of 32 starters to take the £2,500 prize.

He was also second in the Grand Prix and fifth in the A&B stakes.

Louise Alston finished third in the Grade C final and seventh in the accumulator with her own Rostaar, while Joanne Bell and Theunis came fourth in the Grade C final.

Douglas Duffin riding Richard Jenkinson's Cameron Poe was second in the Foxhunter Final and Rachel Walker with Tanon came third in the Young Masters. Very well done to all of them.

Still hoping to secure a definite place in the Olympic eventing squad, Ruth Edge is continuing to notch up some terrific results.

Fresh from her two victories at Burgie with Carnaval Prince and Nick of Thyme, she also took first in the OI at Salperton Park with Two Thyme on an outstanding dressage score of 15.9 and just 0.4 time faults on the cross-country course.

She also came seventh in the Intermediate with Greycote Merlin.

Dairy farmer Kathy Whitehead is still riding high after winning the Intro at the recent Hutton-in-the-forest horse trials with her former racehorse Arvi's Way.

Kathy has just come back to eventing after a break of around twelve years, and this was just the second run this year for the eleven year old 17.2 gelding who spent part of his racing career in Sue and Harvey Smith's yard.

Kathy, who broke her collar bone last autumn, says Arvi persuaded her back into eventing because he's well-mannered and sensible, controllable yet brave - proof if proof were needed that ex-racers can forge a glittering new career away from the track.

Trust British Summertime to get underway with a weekend of the worst weather we've seen in months - torrential rain and high winds putting paid to many riders' plans.

However, it seems Cumbria Riding Club members are tougher than the rest, because they braved the conditions to take part in a Combined Training Day on Sunday.

Tina Crowley and Nikki Heal flew the flag for Cockermouth, whilst Jackie Southward from Bootle kept South Cumbria in the ribbons.

Tina and her mare Lugardis won both their Novice classes, with Nikki and Cavalier D'Or close behind in second place.

Elbow grease paid off for Jackie Southward and her well turned out skewbald mare Millstones Rosie when they won the Best Turnout and had a first and third in the Prelim classes.

Meanwhile club members Rebecca McDonnell and Sarah Irving came up trumps at the British Riding Club Area Horse Trials Qualifier at Somerford Park on Saturday June 21 despite terrible weather and slippery conditions.

Rebecca and her horse Landetto were fourth overall and third as an individual in the Open class, just missing out on qualifying for the finals by a mere 0.6 penalty point.

Sarah with Keyhouse Sandpiper achieved eighth place in the Novice class of 70 competitors, but got time penalties for being too fast.

Greenlands was the venue for the annual Spotted horse show, this year run as a charity event to raise money for Cumbria's Headway fund for people suffering from brain injuries.

Judge Malcolm Bewsher, who has just been made an honorary Life member of the BSJA for his many years of dedicated service to the sport, had a tough job on his hands choosing between some truly beautiful horses in the spotted classes.

The Saltcreek Stud, based at Seaville near Silloth had a particularly successful day, their stallion Warrior of Saltcreek displaying his great versatility by winning the Ridden Championship and the highest points in the Western class section.

He was also there to see one of his offspring, Saltcreek Tomahawk take the Best Yearling honours.

Inglewood staged its last UK Chasers dressage qualifier before the regional finals on July 6 and were delighted with both a good turnout and a high standard of competition.

Chef John Crouch says we should forage our food from nature. Would you ever do that?

Yes, it would be fresh and healthy

No, I don't have the time so I'll stick to my tins and processed stuff
