John wins three categories

One wrestler was Victor Ludorum at the Roman Wall Show. John Harrington of Bewaldeth weighed in at under 11½ stones and won that category then went on to be best at 13½ stones and in the All Weights.
On the way, the old master, Alan Jones, did take a good fall with an inside hipe, but otherwise Harrington was untroubled even when up against much heavier opposition. In the All Weights semi-final he met a powerful and weighty newcomer, Thomas Graham of Alston. Escaping from the Graham's clamping arms, Harrington resorted to the hank for the first fall and an excellent inside-click for the second, both being chips that the inexperienced find difficult to counter.
Nathan Birdsall of Rothbury had a good session at the Roman Wall Show, winning at Under-17 Years and reaching the All Weights final. In typical Northumbrian style he went for the short rib, controlled his opponents and then rushed them forward and round onto their noses. His record at Rothbury Vintage Rally on the following day followed much the same pattern with a win at Under-18 and a final spot against his Coach Darren Whitfield in the All Weights.
Good wrestling always needs a supporting cast, and at the Roman Wall two wrestlers played an especial part in this. Craig Ridley was usually up against heavier opposition, but pleased the crowd with his finesse and classic throws. Tristan Davidson has been an occasional wrestler over a number of years, and become good enough to trouble the best wrestlers.
Because of his age and weight Jack Brown of Haydon Bridge, has had a comparatively lean year so far, but at Rothbury a rare Under-14s gave him his chance for a win.
The wrestling event at Low Gill was on a draughty hillside after the Sheep dog trials ended. The event was an excellent one for the Brocklebanks and their cousins, the Hodgsons. The Hodgson sisters Tracey, Hannah and Connie were first, second and third in the girls' event; and brothers Thomas and Graham contested the final of the All Weights, with cousin Scott Brocklebank third. Graham was by far the most successful wrestler with wins at Under-18 and 13st.
