All change on the buses to save £114,000 subsidy

Major changes to bus timetables in west Cumbria will come into force on September 1.Bus service changes

The county council is shaking up its subsidised services, mainly rural routes, to save £114,000 a year.

Casualties include early morning and evening journeys from Maryport to Cockermouth and the Keswick town service, which is scrapped.

But some routes are being improved. There will be new Sunday services for Silloth, Cleator Moor and Frizington, for example.

Ian Stewart, cabinet member for environmental wellbeing, told the cabinet yesterday: “There are some services that are not supported by communities that have become too expensive for us to subsidise.

“It’s not a good use of taxpayers’ money.”

6, Whitehaven-Ravenglass: one extra journey to Seascale but late-afternoon Saturday bus cut. To run via St Bees replacing route 20.

22, Whitehaven-Frizington/Parton: new evening and Sunday service providing a Sunday link to Frizington and Cleator Moor.

39, Fletchertown-Carlisle: to run Tuesdays and Fridays not four days a week as now.

46/47/50, Workington town routes: Sunday service will start and finish earlier running 9.20am-5.39pm.

58, Cockermouth-Maryport: early morning and evening buses cut. More frequent and direct day-time service with low-floor buses.

60, Maryport-Skinburness: new Sunday service.

79, Keswick-Seatoller: early-morning and late-evening journeys withdrawn.

86, Keswick-Portinscale: service scrapped.

217, Cockermouth-Cleator Moor: to terminate at Frizington and run only 8.40am-2.40pm. Diverted to serve Ennerdale Bridge.

222 Workington-Whitehaven via Pica: reduced peak service but off-peak buses to run six days a week not three as now. Routed via High Harrington instead of Distington.

604, Uldale/Ireby-Wigton: reduced service.

830-835, Egremont town services: extra bus at 2.10pm and Braystones bus diverted to serve Beckermet.

Have your say

why when we have the goverment going on about us getting out of our cars to free up the roads and help the enviroment are bus services being cut. surely the goverment should be helping out our travel companies. the bus to silloth on a sunday is a great idea and I for one will use it. Have you also thought about the night workers who use the cockermouth bus late at night and early in the morning.
