Gretna chief claims new bid was snubbed

GRETNA chairman Ron MacGregor has revealed a new bid was made to save the club this week – but claims the deal was scuppered by administrator David Elliot.

MacGregor pleaded with Elliot to delay resigning from the Scottish Football League to give the mystery bidder more time – a move which sounded the death knell for Gretna.

But the long-serving chairman, who has been fighting desperately to save the club, said Elliot refused.

McGregor, whose wife Helen was club secretary and vice-chairman, said: “We heard about another bid and I wanted to wait before but the administrator insisted on putting in Gretna’s resignation to the SFL. That extinguished all hope, which was very disappointing.

“It’s very difficult because the administrator had legal authority. All Helen and I could do was ask questions and suggest possibilities.

“We were desperate for any little opening, but when the chips were down, it was his decision.

“I’ve put my head on the block by being optimistic so it’s been very disappointing.”

Elliot was this week unavailable for comment.
