WE shared the news that plans to change the shopfront of a Grade II listed Carlisle building have been submitted to Cumberland Council.
The application is for a site in English Street, formerly the Joules store.
The application is from Luxury Leisure (part of the Novomatic Group), a 'market leading provider of gaming and entertainment venues', with more than 250 high street and seaside gaming venues in the UK.
Here's what readers thought.
Sharon Whittaker said: "Carlisle does not need more gambling establishments. We need clothing retailers," while Rachel Sharp said: "I'd say not the right location for a casino. More thought definitely needs to go into what businesses are sited where in the pedestrianised city centre, close to the old town hall. A policy of filling empty units with just anything in a family-oriented retail area won't help."
Therese Chisem added: "Not really conducive to put a gambling establishment in the city centre," and Lezley Gibson said: "Just pleased to see a shop open instead of all the closed places, we need to use the town or we are going to lose it."
John Hall added: "We don’t need gambling business we need more stores," and Jen Ridley said: "Not the sort of place for a main shopping street. It’s not going to bring shoppers into the town centre and more likely to drive people away even more."
One web user said: "There have been loads of these types of establishments over the years and every time they open and then close."
