Traditionally, it was the time when football took a back seat and the summer game took over.
Football never seems to fade away for long these days, but there are still cases of crossover.
Only last weekend, for instance, Carlisle United's Jack Armer was starring with bat and ball for Penwortham CC in Lancashire.
The Blues left-back took three wickets for 17 from eight overs and then hit 57 from 68 balls in a three-wicket win over Ingol with Freckleton CC.
Armer has long been a keen cricketer...and he is in good company at Carlisle down the years.
