A memorial service to mark the loss of fishermen will be held later this month.

Rev Bernard Noghiu, the vicar of Maryport CofE and Rev George Ayoma of Trinity Church Fleetwood have organised the service for Maryport, at the harbourside, on May 12 at 3pm for National Fishing Remembrance Day with the Fisherman’s Mission.

The Fisherman’s Mission is a charity that supports active and former fishermen and their dependents.

Founded in 1881, as the Royal National Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen, the Fishermen’s Mission maintains a Christian presence around the coast of the UK.

The national memorial which will see similar event nationwide is also organised by Stella Maris, a ship-visitng network which aims to improve the lives of seafares and fishers, and the Seafarers Charity, which aims to do the same.

It will commemorate the deaths of those ‘tragically lost in the course of a fishing trip’, Rev Ayoma said.

He added: “That is why it felt appropriate to hold the service by the memorial stone for the three men of the Aquila.

“I remember the day of that tragedy well and I still deal with the families with whom I remain in regular contact, who continue to tell me their stories and the impact that their loss has meant to them.”
